Apple's compact desktops are on sale now – they hit shelves on 22 September 2026 as promised. The Mac Studio brings the new M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, and the Mac mini moves to the new M6 (Apple's first 2nm chip) and M5 Pro. This guide is updated with confirmed specs and prices – and, since the future is clearly AI-shaped, with the part that matters most: which one to buy for running LLMs locally.

Update note (Sep 24, 2026): launch-day details confirmed – the only configuration still waitlisted is the 512GB M5 Ultra (late October). Everything else ships now. Prices below are Apple's US and India list prices at launch.

The short version

Before the detail, here's the lineup at a glance.

Model Chips CPU / GPU Memory Bandwidth
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Mac mini (2026) M6 12c / 12c 16–32GB 170GB/s
Mac mini (2026) M5 Pro up to 18c / 20c 24–64GB 307GB/s
Mac Studio (2026) M5 Max 18c / up to 40c 36–128GB up to 614GB/s
Mac Studio (2026) M5 Ultra up to 36c / 80c 96–512GB 1.2TB/s

For local AI, read that table right to left: memory decides which models load, bandwidth decides how fast they talk. A Mac mini M6 tops out at 32GB (small models only); the M5 Ultra's 512GB runs frontier-class models entirely on device. Our picks are at the bottom – but if you only remember one line: buy memory first, chip second.

Prices: US and India

ModelUS (edu)India (edu)Base RAM / storage
Mac mini M6$899 ($799)β‚Ή99,990 (β‚Ή88,900)16GB / 256GB
Mac mini M5 Pro$1,699 ($1,599)β‚Ή2,09,900 (β‚Ή1,97,900)24GB / 512GB
Mac Studio M5 Max$2,499 ($2,299)β‚Ή2,79,900 (β‚Ή2,56,900)36GB / 512GB
Mac Studio M5 Ultra$5,499 ($5,099)β‚Ή6,29,900 (β‚Ή5,84,900)96GB / 1TB

Two pricing realities. First, the minis both went up $100 over the M4 generation – and the entry point has jumped from $599 to $899 in two months (memory-crunch hikes). Education pricing wipes out the increase exactly. Second, the Studio held its line: M5 Max starts where M4 Max did, and the M5 Ultra tier is $200 over the outgoing M3 Ultra. If a discounted M4 mini is still on shelves near you, it is now the value pick of the whole lineup.

Mac Studio: the real deal

The Mac Studio has always been the "small box, enormous performance" option – the one you buy when the Mac mini tops out but you don't want a tall Mac Pro. This year it gets two chips, and both are among the most powerful Apple silicon ever made. Apple discontinued the Mac Pro earlier this year, so the Studio is now simply the most powerful Mac desktop, period.

M5 Max – the creator's sweet spot

M5 Max is aimed at editors, developers, and designers. The AI numbers are the standout – and the per-GPU-core Neural Accelerators (faster matrix multiplication) are why. Note the configuration trap: the $2,499 stock 32-core GPU runs at 460GB/s, not 614GB/s. For LLM generation speed, the 40-core upgrade is worth more than it looks on paper.

M5 Ultra – the ceiling

M5 Ultra fuses two M5 Max dies (quad-die via next-gen UltraFusion) into a single system-on-chip. The result:

This is the chip for colour-grading uncompressed 8K, computational fluid dynamics, or running frontier-class models entirely on device – no cloud tokens needed. The full 512GB configuration arrives in late October (pricing TBD at launch); the rest of the range ships now.

What's genuinely new under the hood

Mac mini: M6 and M5 Pro

The mini stays tiny (12.7 Γ— 12.7 cm) with ports front and back, and supports up to three 6K displays on M5 Pro. Why does the mini matter for AI? It became the surprise local-AI hero this year – a big RAM pool in a small, silent, always-on box that sips 25–55W – and demand from agent users (OpenClaw, Hermes-style always-on setups) even emptied shelves and pushed up resale prices. Apple clearly noticed: the press release calls the mini its leading desktop for always-on agentic computing.

Running LLMs locally: the decision guide

This is the section to read twice, because it decides where your money goes. Apple's unified-memory design plus the MLX ecosystem (MLX, LM Studio, Ollama, exo) makes Macs unusually good local-LLM machines. Three rules run everything:

Which models fit which Mac (4-bit quantization)

Model ~memory M6 mini M5 Pro mini M5 Max M5 Ultra

* 32B on a 32GB M6 leaves almost nothing for context or the OS – short chats only. ** 70B on 64GB loads but long documents will squeeze it; 96GB+ is comfortable. Our earlier bandwidth-based estimates for this generation: ~15–25 tok/s for 32B on M5 Pro, ~25–40 tok/s on M5 Max, ~45–70 tok/s on Ultra; ~35–55 tok/s for 70B on Ultra. Community-measured reference points on older Ultras (70B at 8–13 tok/s on M1/M2 Ultra, DeepSeek-671B at ~17 tok/s on M3 Ultra 512GB via MLX) suggest these estimates are plausible, not promised – quantization, context length and runtime (MLX vs Ollama) move them plenty.

Our picks by workload

Before you buy: three gotchas

Which desktop is yours?

Use case Best choice
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Home office, coding, web Mac mini with M6 (24GB+)
Always-on AI agents, light pro work Mac mini with M5 Pro (48–64GB)
Video editing, design, dev + 70B AI Mac Studio with M5 Max (64–128GB)
Frontier AI, 8K, multi-display Mac Studio with M5 Ultra (256–512GB)

For most people the Mac mini with M6 is more than enough – just don't buy the 16GB base if AI is the reason. Step up to M5 Pro for agent headroom. Only reach for the Studio when you've outgrown 64GB; and only chase Ultra for models or pipelines that genuinely need hundreds of gigabytes. Check fit first with our LLM VRAM calculator and VRAM-per-model guide.

Bottom line

The future-is-AI lens clarifies this lineup completely. The Mac mini M6 (24–32GB) is the affordable AI starter; the mini M5 Pro 64GB is the always-on agent server; the Studio M5 Max 64–128GB is the local-AI sweet spot most serious users should buy; and the Studio M5 Ultra 512GB is the "frontier on your desk" machine arriving in late October. Everything else – ports, displays, storage speed – is genuinely nice but secondary. Buy memory, and the AI future fits on your desk.

FAQ

Which Mac is best for running LLMs locally?

Mac Studio with M5 Max and 64–128GB is the sweet spot – it runs 70B-class models at usable speeds with room for long context. The M5 Ultra (256–512GB) is for 120B+ and big MoE models; the Mac mini suits 7–32B models.

How much unified memory do I need for local AI?

16GB fits 7–8B models only; 32GB covers 14B comfortably; 64GB handles 32B well and 70B tightly; 128GB runs 70B comfortably; 256GB+ is for 120B and mixture-of-experts models. Always keep a few GB free for the OS.

Is the Mac mini M6 good for AI?

Yes for starter workloads – 4Γ— claimed AI uplift over M4 and Apple's first 2nm chip – but configure at least 24GB (32GB better). The 16GB base is too small for anything beyond small chat models.

Mac Studio M5 Max or M5 Ultra for AI?

Max for 70B-class daily driving; Ultra only if your models exceed ~100GB (120B+, large MoE, huge contexts or batching). Note the stock Max GPU runs at 460GB/s – the 40-core upgrade unlocks the full 614GB/s.

Can a Mac replace an NVIDIA GPU for local AI?

For LLM inference, often yes – Macs offer far more memory per dollar in silence. For CUDA-locked work (video diffusion, some training), NVIDIA still wins on speed and software support.

When is the 512GB M5 Ultra available?

Late October 2026, per Apple. All other Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations ship since September 22, 2026.
