Building your first PC is scary until you realise one thing: every part answers the same question โ what are you going to do with this computer? Decide that first, and the parts choose themselves.
Step 0: Define the build
Be honest about your primary use. This determines where your budget goes:
- Gaming โ most of the budget to the GPU.
- Programming / general work โ balanced, a good CPU matters.
- Video editing / 3D โ strong CPU + GPU + lots of RAM.
- Office / web browsing โ a modest build will feel instant.
Don't build a "future-proof" monster for web browsing โ you'll overspend on parts that never get used.
1. CPU: the brain
Two brands dominate: AMD and Intel. For most first builds, the current mid-range of either brand is more than enough. A simple mental model:
- Ryzen 5 / Core i5 โ the sweet spot for almost everyone.
- Ryzen 7 / Core i7 โ heavy multitasking, streaming, rendering.
- Ryzen 3 / Core i3 โ budget builds, office work, light gaming.
Check the socket! The CPU must match the motherboard socket. If you pick a CPU first, the motherboard comes next โ it has to fit both the socket and your other parts.
2. Motherboard: the spine
The motherboard connects everything and dictates your upgrade path. Three things to match:
- Socket โ must match your CPU.
- RAM type โ DDR4 or DDR5; get a board that supports what you're buying.
- Form factor โ ATX (full-size), micro-ATX, or mini-ITX. Make sure it fits your case.
For a first build, a solid mid-range board with enough USB ports and M.2 slots is all you need. You don't need the top-end "gaming" boards.
3. RAM: more than you think
The rule has shifted: 16 GB is the new minimum, 32 GB is comfortable. Browsers, apps, and games eat memory faster than you expect.
- 16 GB โ fine for gaming and general use today.
- 32 GB โ editing, virtualization, heavy multitasking, "future-proof".
- Speed โ buy RAM at the speed your CPU/motherboard support. More GB > more speed.
Buying a matched kit (two identical sticks) is better than mixing sizes, because it runs in dual-channel mode โ effectively faster memory access.
4. Storage: SSD first, always
This is the single biggest quality-of-life decision. Never build a PC with only an HDD. An NVMe SSD for the OS makes everything feel instant.

If budget is tight, get the SSD and skip the HDD. You can add storage later; starting with a spinning drive as your boot drive is the most common regret.

5. GPU: gaming's biggest player
If you're gaming or doing GPU-heavy work, this is where your money goes. NVIDIA and AMD both make great cards at every tier:
- Entry โ 1080p gaming, esports titles.
- Mid-range โ the sweet spot: 1080p/1440p at high settings.
- High-end โ 4K, ray tracing, heavy rendering.
Match the card to your monitor's resolution. A 4K monitor with a budget GPU is wasted money, and a monster GPU on a 1080p monitor is money you didn't need to spend.
If you have a CPU with integrated graphics, you can skip the GPU entirely for a non-gaming build โ that's a great budget move.

6. The "AI PC" question
Every CPU nowadays markets itself with AI. Here's what's real and what you can ignore. Modern chips include an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) โ a small, efficient processor built for AI tasks like background blur in calls, real-time captions, and on-device AI features in Windows.
The honest picture for a first build:
- You don't need an "AI PC" for AI features today. Current NPUs are modest. A normal CPU + GPU already handles everyday AI tools fine.
- Heavy AI work (local LLMs, image generation, training) runs on the GPU, not the NPU. If this is your goal, put the budget into a GPU with more VRAM.
- NPUs matter most for battery life and efficiency on laptops running Windows AI features continuously. On a desktop, they're a nice extra, not a decision-maker.
So: don't pay a big premium for an "AI PC" sticker on a desktop build. Pick the CPU and GPU for what you'll actually do โ gaming, editing, or coding โ and you'll have perfectly good AI performance along the way.
7. Power supply: don't cheap out
The PSU is easy to ignore but the most dangerous part to cheap out on. Rules:
- Buy at least 80 Plus Bronze rated, from a known brand.
- Size it with headroom โ a good calculator says "~450W" โ buy 550โ600W.
- Never reuse a sketchy old PSU from another build.
A failing PSU can damage every other part in the case. It's worth the extra $20.

The case is mostly aesthetics + airflow. Any well-reviewed mid-tower with a mesh front and at least a couple of fans is fine. Most CPUs come with a stock cooler that works โ upgrade later if temperatures bother you.

Case + fans mesh front, a few 120mm fans AI note: skip the "AI PC" premium โ a good CPU + GPU handles everyday AI, and heavy AI needs GPU VRAM anyway.
Pick parts around a theme ("good 1080p gaming machine") rather than around individual specs, and your first build will go great. Ready to build? The actual assembly is basically expensive LEGO โ parts only fit one way.
